When you realise that your people need a step change in their performance in a certain area, dusting off old training materials will rarely suffice.
Training is an opportunity to assess where you are and work out what you need to do to make transformational rather than marginal gains.
As an organisation who helps source training for companies who are seeking such a transformation, once a client has worked out what they want to improve (and why), there are four key stepping stones to success:
Introspective attitude. As the demands of modern business sometimes call for new approaches, it is important to understand which current internal training methods will still be fit for purpose. Improving what you have is better than reinventing the wheel, so initially, there needs to be an element of honest introspection.
Evaluate solutions. This is where an external perspective is essential. When a company understands what works for other companies with similar needs, they are able to see which changes might be beneficial for them. We work hard to understand where a client wishes to take their business and provide options that fit their circumstances.
Optimise the mix. Training has to work as a total package – if there are gaps in what is being delivered, the effectiveness of the training may suffer. Ensuring that the new learning solutions complement the existing methods is crucial. This may involve letting go of certain previous approaches – outdated training simply has to be left on the shelf.
Make it work. Once we have left, it is vital that the client doesn’t forget what was learnt. Regular follow-ups are crucial to reinforce the learning. It is also vital to understand whether the training had the desired result, and what could be changed for next time. Organisations stay ahead of the competition when they adopt an attitude of continuous improvement.
For me, the biggest challenge in arranging a training schedule is the choice that is available in the market.
There are a thousand and one providers all promising outstanding results, but given the individual circumstances of every client, it is rare that so many of them will actually be a good fit for their needs.
When you take the first steps along that curve of transformation, it is crucial to be open to new ways of learning but equally crucial to ensure that they are a fit for your needs.
You can achieve the impossible if you build the right path towards it. We can help you.
