Overview

There are several different Microsoft certification programmes. This guide is on the MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer) course path. There are a choice of different specialisms you can have your MCSD on including MCSD Windows Store Apps, MCSD Web Applications, MCSD SharePoint Applications and MCSD Application Lifecycle Management.

The MCSD certifications all prove your ability to build innovative solutions across multiple technologies, both on-premises and in the cloud with each individual MCSD proving your ability on a certain technology. To gain each title, you must pass all of the required examinations associated to the certification.

These qualifications are official Microsoft titles and are therefore recognised by all in the industry and are known as the globally recognised standard for developer excellence. They are therefore excellent additions to any IT professional’s CV who work in this specific area.

Who are the MCSD Certifications for?

The MCSD Certifications are all aimed at different people depending on their job role. These are detailed below:

MCSD Windows Store Apps: Demonstrates your expertise at designing and developing fast and fluid Windows 8 apps and will qualify you for such jobs as software developer, web developer, and quality engineer.

MCSD Web Applications: Recognises your expertise in creating and deploying modern web applications and services therefore qualifying you for a position as a web developer or web administrator.

MCSD SharePoint Applications: Proves your expertise at designing and developing collaboration applications with Microsoft SharePoint. This MCSD will qualify you for such jobs as software developer or web developer.

MCSD Application Lifecycle Management: Verifies your expertise in managing the entire lifespan of application development and will qualify you for such jobs as developer, applications engineer, and IT project manager.

What qualifications are involved?

In order to obtain the MCSD Certifications, candidates must complete all of the required exams that are each linked to a particular training course. Although the training is optional, it is strongly recommended you attend them to ensure you are fully prepared for the exams. Below is a table showing all of the relevant training courses to each MCSD certification.

Note – For the MCSD Windows Store Apps there are 2 paths to gaining the certification, either using HTML5 or C#. If you’re leveraging your existing web programming skills in JavaScript, or starting from scratch on a new website, we recommend choosing the HTML5 path. If you‘re a .NET developer and are planning to create Windows 8 apps, choose the C# path.

MCSD Courses

How do I become accredited?

The exams from these courses must be completed. As previously mentioned, only the exams are required however the training is usually recommended in order to pass the exams. The training courses can be a range of durations and will often require extra study outside of the classroom. Normally you are able to sit the exam separately if it is more convenient. You are also required to take a re-certification exam every 2 years to prove your continued abilities in the subject.

What comes next?

The next certification up from the MCSD is to get the relevant MCSM (Microsoft Certified Solutions Master) certification to your area. Read more about the MCSM qualifications here.
